Fuerteventura – First Solo Holiday

10/1/23 – 14/1/23

My first ever Solo holiday abroad. This was one of the most scary things I had done with my life. Going for a hike alone or a night away alone was scary but good and I had got used to it. It was time to push myself again and try something new…So the first solo holiday abroad came into plan!

I decided on Fuerteventura because it was all inclusive with everything I needed in case I did get scared to leave the hotel, But the big thing for me was there was a beach right outside of the hotel and a mountain overlooking us too.

I had broken my foot a few weeks earlier so I knew this was going to be interesting. The traveling alone was fine, it is easier than you think it is. Just push through your nerves. The spending days to myself with no one that spoke English was the interesting thing. I think I found about 3 people that spoke English and I cannot speak Spanish to save my life. Something I have decided to change!

I had taken my laptop with me so I could do some of my uni work while I was there. It was a lovely few days away though, I did naked sunbathing, yoga on the beach, hiked a mountain with a Spanish trig, Visited another town, got some uni work done and just relaxed! Exactly what I had been needing to be honest. It is such a beautiful place to visit.

The mountain was literally 2 minutes away from my hotel, hiking up when it is already about 18 degrees at 9am is hard but beautiful. Getting up the mountain didn’t take long to get up, it is just scree that you have to deal with but for the view at the top. It is well worth the hike up, you have the view of the sea from one side and mountain views from the otherside. While sat at the top of the trig point, a cute chipmunk came over to sit with me and I even got to see a mum and baby mountain goat sat on the side of the cliff side. The hike down was full of scree and of course I went flying over on my broken ankle! Lets bear in mind, I had no clue it was broken by this point, I only found out 2 months later! But anyway, I ended up on the floor, with a throbbing ankle and didn’t move for about 10 minutes until it had stopped hurting. I got back up and I got to enjoy the hike down with another hill on the way down, some beautiful memorial hearts made from stone on top of one of the hills too.

I then continued to walk into the next town and enjoy the rest of the day before heading back to the hotel to relax and complete some work.

My 2 other days involved, 1 day of visiting another town walking all the way down the beach to the other town and heading into their hills to get some amazing views from the church and having a look around the shops and 1 day of sitting around the hotel pool, going the beach for yoga and a bit of naked sunbathing on their naked beach. That really pushed me out of my comfort zone but was really worth it!

If you get the chance to get out and hike mountains in another country…do it, you won’t regret it. It is just an amazing experience with very different views from the UK.

Solo holidays are a whole new experience I think everyone should experience at some point in their lives. It gives you a different perspective on life and the things in your life. It allows you to enjoy your own company and learn to know yourself properly.
