Padley Gorge

2/9/2023

We went off to Padley gorge as a birthday walk for Tom’s sister. We had Tom’s sister, her friend and a couple of dogs with us that day.

For September the weather was really nice and warm out! We had a beautiful day for it. Padley gorge is a stunning walk to do, it has everything, field walking, a river to walk by and dip your feet into, road walking into a town, old buildings, a forest, cliff sides, Heather and some rock climbing/scrambling. For anyone who doesn’t want a long walk, we only did just over 6 miles that day, with 861ft in height. This sort of walk, is more of a stroll to enjoy the sites that nature is providing to you.

We managed to park up for free on the main road outside of one of the pubs, which is a great place because it means you can change your shoes and cross the road straight to the pub at the end of the hike! Who doesn’t love the ease of that!

We first headed past Grindleford Station Cafe and up to Burbage Brook. As we hit the brook, the dogs were loving life in and out of the water, making the most of it while the weather was warm enough to do playing in it. We started to head into the forest from here, full of green grass and stunningly tall green trees. There was no one around apart from ourselves, it felt so calm to be there and really enjoyable to get the place to ourselves and explore. We reached Padley gorge which is stunning! Again the dogs were straight into the water, I’m afraid it did not look like somewhere I would want to be dipping into though. However, it was stunning to look at and just take in for a moment. We were able to climb up the side of the gorge and onto the top and look over, this gave us a different and very stunning view from all around.

We carried on the walk after many pictures and headed towards the heather and on to the rocks at Owler Tor. The rocks we were able to climb up and just take in everything that surrounded me at the time. It gave me peace for a second before heading back down and joining the others for some lunch.

It was time to head back to the pub, on our way we walked down the ride of the river, the dogs straight in again, which I couldn’t blame them for! Through the fields of cows and sheep grazing on the land and into a little town with a stunning church. Before we knew it our little 6 miles were over and we were in the pub. We chose 6 miles that day as it was Tom’s sisters birthday and we had surprised her with a meal and a homemade birthday cake made by myself.

Laura had a great day and so did the rest of us! Padley gorge is a must see.
